Tiny Home Solar 101

Steeltown Solar will be presenting information about on & off-grid solar systems with emphasis on considerations unique to tiny houses. Key discussion points include: energy conservation and energy efficiency; energy consumption of standard appliances & equipment; typical solar PV electricity generation potential (in Ontario); typical solar PV system configurations, including energy storage systems; system permitting, design, & commissioning; system operation & maintenance; and system costs & financing. The presentation is intended to increase awareness of electricity consumption and the importance of buying energy efficient equipment/appliances, further understanding of the physical size and cost of a solar PV system in relation to the appliances and equipment it is powering, and enable informed decisions to be made regarding solar PV as an option for energy self-sufficiency. While focusing on the unique aspects specific to tiny homes, the information will also inform the home owner on thesuitability of such a system for their residential home.

Municipalities regulate properties with Zoning and through the Building Code. Zoning often sees tiny homes as “Recreational Vehicles” rather than homes, as does the Building Code. This session will be led by a Registered Professional Planner and will provide some very practical advice on what Zoning really means and what to look for, and to avoid with your quest for that perfect tiny home property!

Tiny homes on leased land

Bianca will be presenting her Affordable Housing Framework, “Tiny Homes on Leased Land”. This framework outlines a unique way to unlock affordable housing, enabling tiny house dwellers to finance a tiny home and legally locate that home on property through current municipal bylaws. She will outline types and certifications of Tiny, Modular and Manufactured homes, how to live tiny, how to find a builder, how to find land, and, importantly, how tiny homes are becoming legal on leased land through her Affordable Housing Framework and discussions with local municipalities.

Wind energy 101

The seminar’s goals are to provide an overview of: 1) wind-based electricity from microgeneration wind turbines, 2) factors impacting wind generation, 3) microgeneration wind turbine and tower system. Ed will be discussing the ways that tiny homes can integrate into society and how they can co-exist with traditional housing. Key points covered will include a look at the pros & cons of each form of tiny home integration including: vacant lots/land; secondary/granny suites & laneway/carriage houses; pocket neighbourhoods; tiny home communities & Tiny Towns. Ed will look at tiny home communities and how they can be configured to expand affordable housing options. Ed will bring all the best points together with a look at the Tiny Town model and how it can be used to establish tiny home communities that will remain affordable, re-establish community among its citizens, convert unused rural/farmland into vegetable producing acreage, build a community that produces the power it uses, and is designed to integrate life with the world around it. This presentation will look at the evolving Kingston model tiny home community and discuss the next steps to establish the first Tiny Town.
