Tiny Home Show explores options in unaffordable housing market

Hamilton, Ontario (June 23, 2022) – The Tiny Home Show, a consumer show dedicated to tiny homes and affordable, sustainable lifestyles, will feature new and alternative housing options amid an ongoing housing crisis.

You might have seen tiny homes featured on Netflix’s Tiny House Nation and countless PInterest boards, but most people have not seen one in real life. The Tiny Home Show offers the opportunity to tour real tiny homes.

As housing prices continue to climb, home ownership is out of reach for many in Hamilton where the average home sale price is over $900,000 (Hamilton Housing Market Report | June 2022). By comparison, most new tiny home builds are priced under $200,000.

The Tiny Home Show, held in Ancaster, Ontario from August 4 to 7, aims to immerse attendees in the tiny lifestyle with a lineup of professionally built tiny home models and expert speakers. The show explores affordable and sustainable housing options and offers the opportunity to engage with others in the Canadian tiny home movement.

Features of the Show

Tour tiny homes – Tour over a dozen models of tiny homes, cabins, trailers, and even a converted van. Tourable home models include two tiny homes by ZeroSquared (the only Canadian builder on Netflix’s Tiny House Nation) and the only public tour of a new build by the exclusive Fritz Tiny Homes (featured twice by Dwell Magazine).

Get your tiny lifestyle questions answered – Where can I park a tiny home in Ontario? How do I permit a tiny home? How do I start a tiny home community? How do I build a secondary dwelling unit? All these topics will be explored by our expert speakers.

“The housing market is in crisis mode and we need more homes and more choices,” said D’Arcy McNaughton, Founder of Acorn Tiny Homes and Tiny Home Show Exhibitor. “My family and I chose to live tiny so that we could live debt free. As a builder, the most rewarding part of my job is helping people from all walks of life achieve this very same goal.”

“For us, this show is inspired by Stacey, a single empty-nester in Ontario whom we interviewed for Tiny Homes in Canada. She had shared that, while working a full-time job, she was being priced out of the rental market in her small town. The town motel was full of people like her,” said Maria Sturova, Editor of Tiny Homes in Canada and Tiny Home Show Co-Producer. “We’ve had responses from hundreds of people telling us they are in the same situation and they want to live in a tiny home. We hope this show will help launch tiny homes from an idea to a practical reality in the province.”

Why Tiny Homes?

Tiny home dwellers are attracted by the financial freedom of tiny living and the opportunity to reduce their environmental footprint while focusing their lifestyle on what’s important to them.

First-time home buyers, retirees, single parents, young professionals, and empty-nesters in Ontario are considering living in a tiny home. Tiny homes are minimally sized homes (around 200-400 sq. ft.) that are recognized by the Ontario Building Code and best suited for one- or two-person households. According to Stats Canada Census 2016, over half (59%) of all Ontario households are comprised of one to two people.

Ontario provincial and municipal governments are seeing the opportunities that tiny homes offer in the housing affordability crisis. Many are currently reviewing ways to introduce tiny homes as primary or secondary dwellings. Two speakers at the show will be sharing their story of starting a tiny home community within their Ontario municipalities, Kingston and Chatham-Kent.
