Habitat for Humanity Halton-Mississauga-Dufferin

Habitat for Humanity Halton-Mississauga-Dufferin (HabitatHMD) is a non-profit organization dedicated to empowering working lower-income families to build strength, stability, and independence by providing affordable housing that enables financial equity and lasting change. In addition to building affordable homes, HabitatHMD has developed an innovative education and workforce development training opportunity through its “Youth Skilled Trades Program” —an initiative that empowers high school students with hands-on experience in the construction industry.
As part of the program, students collaborate with educators and professional tradespeople to build fully livable, legal, and code-compliant tiny homes designed to meet the highest standards of safety and comfort. This program allows students to gain real-world skills in carpentry, electrical, plumbing, and sustainable construction. Over 15 Tiny Homes have been built in partnership with four different First Nation communities, and as the program expands, we are now offering the opportunity for local community members to purchase these units for their backyards. All proceeds go directly back into supporting more students in experiencing real-world construction projects.
The unit featured at the trade show is a 230-square-foot studio Tiny Home, designed by True North Tiny Homes and built by students using energy-efficient principles and materials. HabitatHMD Tiny Homes offer a fully self-contained living space with a kitchen, bathroom, and bedroom. All high-risk work, including electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and roofing is completed by licensed subcontractors. Each unit is fully permitted and inspected by local municipalities and the Electrical Safety Authority to ensure compliance with building codes and safety standards.
