Tiny Home Show explores options for affordable housing and urban densification
Hamilton, Ontario (July 25, 2023) – The Tiny Home Show, a consumer show dedicated to tiny homes and affordable, sustainable lifestyles, will feature new and alternative housing options amid an ongoing housing crisis.
The Tiny Home Show, now in its second year, will be held in Ancaster, Ontario from July 28 to 30, 2023. It aims to immerse attendees in the tiny lifestyle by offering:
– Over 25 tourable models with professional builders on-site to walk you through their tiny homes.
– A lineup of expert speakers discussing the legalities of tiny homes in Ontario, including how the Ontario Building Code applies to tiny homes and how different Ontario municipalities recognize these dwellings in their bylaws.
– Demos and presentations to explore the practical side of tiny living, from tax implications and budgeting, to off-grid power systems, waterless toilets, capsule wardrobes, and more.
As housing prices continue to climb, home ownership is out of reach for many Ontario residents. The Government of Ontario has been seeking ways to innovate and introduce more housing, quicker, in the province. Tiny homes can be a solution to sustainably increase housing supply for smaller households, with gentle urban densification.
The Tiny Home Show showcases options and ideas for people looking to live full-time in a tiny home as their primary dwelling, as well as those looking to acquire a rental property, cottage, glamping or vacation rental, or even a converted van for travel.
“Tiny home dwellers are attracted by the financial freedom of tiny living and the opportunity to reduce their environmental footprint while focusing their lifestyle on what’s important to them”, says Bianca Metz, Tiny Home Show Co-Producer and tiny living consultant. “I’ve worked with several Ontario municipalities over the past year to introduce a land leasing framework for tiny homes, which will create a more affordable path to homeownership while also generating additional income for residents renting out part of their backyards.”
Why Tiny Homes?
Tiny home dwellers are attracted by the financial freedom of tiny living and the opportunity to reduce their environmental footprint while focusing their lifestyle on what’s important to them.
First-time home buyers, retirees, single parents, young professionals, and empty-nesters in Ontario are considering living in a tiny home. Tiny homes are minimally sized homes (around 200-400 sq. ft.) that are recognized by the Ontario Building Code and best suited for one- or two-person households. According to Stats Canada Census 2016, over half (59%) of all Ontario households are comprised of one to two people.
