Tiny Town Association

Ed Peterson is the Founder & Director of the Tiny Town Association, a Federal not-for-profit incorporated in 2017, that is working to establish places where people can live tiny.

“The idea of tiny homes is not to challenge traditional housing, rather to offer an affordable, sustainable, environmentally responsible option for people interested in a more minimalistic lifestyle.”

The Association is working to establish an affordable housing system that separates home ownership from land ownership, so that it can remain affordable for generations to come.

Presentation: Tiny Home Integration and Communities

Ed will be discussing the ways that tiny homes can integrate into society and how they can co-exist with traditional housing. Tiny homes can increase the availability of affordable housing in several ways. Key points covered will include a look at the pros & cons of each form of tiny home integration including: vacant lots/land; secondary/granny suites & laneway/carriage houses; pocket neighbourhoods; tiny home communities & Tiny Towns. Each form holds unique challenges as well as varying abilities to address affordable housing. Especially important is a look at the longevity of each form as affordable housing.

Ed will look at tiny home communities and how they can be configured to expand affordable housing options. Communities can be established in several ways, and the pros and cons of each type will be considered. The focus is to determine a method that can provide affordable housing for generations to come. While many quick fixes are being implemented to address affordable housing needs, Ed will look at ways to ensure tiny home community affordability moving forward.

Ed will bring all the best points together with a look at the Tiny Town model and how it can be used to establish tiny home communities that will remain affordable, re-establish community among its citizens, convert unused rural/farmland into vegetable producing acreage, build a community that produces the power it uses, and is designed to integrate life with the world around it. This presentation will look at the evolving Kingston model tiny home community and discuss the next steps to establish the first Tiny Town.
